A resident in OB/GYN and a fellow in MFM. As our friends and family members continue to
ask us when we are going to be ‘real doctors’ we can best describe our current
roles as follows:
Resident: what medical students become after 4 long years of
medical school. A residency in OB/GYN
lasts for 4 years. This fun-filled time
consists of working long days (and nights), learning how to deliver babies (in
hospital parking lots as well as laboring rooms), sleeping in stale call rooms
(and sometimes on the keyboard while typing notes), and drinking hefty amounts
of highly caffeinated beverages.
Fellow: what residents can choose to become after they
finish residency. A fellowship in MFM
(Maternal-Fetal Medicine) is 3 years.
This is what I like to call the icing on the cake. Do we all need those extra calories, no, not
really, but for some reason some of us enjoy making a resident’s salary for 3
more years so bring on the carbs!
